I Am Lurch"I Am Lurch"
The Man, the Myth
"I am Lurch"
Nobody really knows the origin behind this joke. In fact, the person who's currently editting this wiki page (Sempai Liz) has no clue what it even means. (edit) The true origin behind the "I Am Lurch" joke began as a campaign slogan. Lurch, being so well known and popular in his day, ran for Vice President for the year '04-'05. It is unkown as to whether or not he was campaigning solely based on the popular vote, but it is believed that he simply did not bother to make the necessary plans and speeches. Later on, the President at the time left her duties with a few weeks left in her term, during which time Lurch took complete control of the club. This appeared to affect his following campaign for President, during which time he again used the slogan "I Am Lurch."
The following year, as Lurch was about to graduate, two people were nominated for his position, Rocky and Jack. Due to a number of potentially damaging proposed changes to club decorum and public arguments, Jack was deemed unfit to lead. Rocky, the arguably more popular (and admittadly much more handsome) candidate, realized that he also did not need to make a strong argument for his position. He therefore, due to the insistance of club members who were in on the joke, relied on his predicessor's slogan and simply said "I Am Lurch." He won by a landslide of 17 votes to 3.
It has from this point on been considered traditional for the popular candidate to begin or end his/her campaign by stating the slogan, "I Am Lurch."
In 2009, year of the Ox, "I am Lurch" was replaced with "Who the fuck is Lurch!?" |
